August 29, 2013, Illinois Policy Institute Reports:
"Almost all metropolitan areas across Illinois saw an increase in their unemployment rate in July. According to the latest seasonally adjusted unemployment numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, eight of Illinois’ 10 Metropolitan Statistical Areas, or MSAs, saw their unemployment rates increase. "Unemployment increased from 9.6 percent (June 2012) to 10.3 percent (June 2013) in the Chicago area, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security." Doesn't sound like much progress has been made in Chicago either over the past year!

The Illinois Policy Institute reported on July 16th, the sad fact that more and more Illinois Citizens are on food stamps (SNAP Assistance), rising faster than most other states in the nation... They report:
"Illinois now has the second-highest unemployment rate in the nation, and more than 1 million Illinoisans are unemployed or underemployed.
As a result, Illinois continues to add people to its food stamp rolls at a clip faster than nearly every other state in the nation. In the last 12 months, 209,000 additional Illinoisans became dependent on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, according to the April 2013 data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
During that same time period, Illinois added only 40,000 nonfarm payroll jobs."

July 29, 2013 - Illinois Policy Institute Reports:
"Poverty is no longer an issue of 'them', it's an issue of 'us'," says Mark Rank, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Rank's analysis is supplemented with figures provided by Tom Hirschl, a professor at Cornell University. Their findings show:
—For the first time since 1975, the number of white single-mother households who were living in poverty with children surpassed or equaled black ones in the past decade, spurred by job losses and faster rates of out-of-wedlock births among whites. White single-mother families in poverty stood at nearly 1.5 million in 2011, comparable to the number for blacks. Hispanic single-mother families in poverty trailed at 1.2 million.

"WJBD News Unemployment in Marion County Is Now 9.9%
The unemployment rate in Marion County increased one-tenth of a percent in May. Labor Market Economist Dennis Hoffman says the rate of 9.9 percent is also a tenth of a point higher than in May of last year and translates into 1,700 on the unemployment roles.
There is very little change one way or another in employment or unemployment in the last few months. Most of the employment activity has been in seasonal type jobs. Construction is still pretty strong especially on roadwork and some commercial projects. There were also advances on leisure and hospitality, wholesale and retail trade," said Hoffman. "Healthcare remains one of the strong industrial sectors, which has it has been for many years and continues to be a place where there are job opportunities.
Marion County is currently tied for the tenth highest unemployment rate in the state. It is the highest rate in South Central Illinois.
